12/4/65 "San Jose Acid Test" first Grateful Dead show they were originally called the "Warlocks" (who played at Magoo's Pizza Parlor on May 5, 1965), but another band already had that name, so in order to get a recording contract they had to change the name. Finding the name was random, while over at Phil's house one day (Dec. 1965-San Francisco), Jerry picked up a dictionary and found the name "Grateful dead"-meaning "the soul of a dead person, or his angel, showing gratitude to someone who, as an act of charity, arranged their burial." Other names considered were: Emergency Crew, Mythical Ethical Icicle Tricycle, and Nonreality Sandwich. How dreadful!!
